How is this possible? A diesel engine works by drawing air into the cylinders and compressing it, this causes it to heat (just like a bicycle pump does when you pump your tyres up), the diesel is injected just before the top of the stroke where the heat causes it to ignite. In most modern turbo diesels the cylinders contain more air that is actually needed to burn the fuel. As a result it is possible in increase the fuel delivered and still get a clean burn. This results in the engine delivering more power/torque at lower speeds.
